Bishop sent to jail for 20 years for rape

A court in Abuja has sentenced Bishop Kenneth Duke to 20 years in prison for raping a 12-year-old girl. The judge, Justice Adebiyi Osolo, said the Bishop cannot pay a fine to avoid the punishment.

The 52-year-old Bishop, from Cross River State, was taken to court by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). The girl, who was the daughter of one of the church members, was staying with the Bishop’s family when the crime happened.

The court heard that in March 2023, the girl’s mother took her to the Bishop’s house in Abuja after a church service. The plan was for the Bishop’s wife to help the girl learn a skill. But the next day, the Bishop sent his children out of the house and stayed alone with the girl. He gave her some math work to do and then raped her while she was solving it.

The court found the Bishop guilty of rape under the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015, and sentenced him to 20 years in prison.
