Nigeria: Fire kills two young brothers in Ondo

Two young brothers, Jelad Oluwaranakinse, aged five, and his three-year-old brother, Jenson, died in a fire that burned their home in Akure, Ondo State, on Wednesday.

Witnesses said their mother, Mrs. Deborah Oluwaranakinse, locked them inside the house and went out to buy food. While she was away, a fire started in the house. Neighbours tried to stop the fire and save the children, but they could not.

One witness said, “We called the fire service, but by the time they came, it was too late. The children had already died.” The cause of the fire is still unknown.

The remains of the two boys were taken to the morgue at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital in Akure.

The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the sad event on Thursday. She said, “The two boys were locked inside the house by their mother, who went out to get food. They were choked and burnt in the fire. We are investigating the cause of the fire.”
