Nigeria: Delta police arrest man for raping a 13-year-old girl

The police in Delta State has arrested a 41-year-old man named Godwin Okon. He raped a 13-year-old girl who lives next to him. 

In a video on X by the police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, Godwin said he raped the girl after her mom left her and her brothers with him to look after. The mom went to the market and asked him to watch the kids.

Godwin said: “This happened on January 3, 2025. The mom, who is my neighbor, left her kids with me. I was surprised because she never asked me to watch her kids before. I told her I can’t do it, I wanted to sleep and I don’t know how to take care of kids. But she begged me.

“When she left, I went into their house. I told her younger brother to clean the living room. Then I told the girl to close the curtains. I pushed her to the bed and raped her. After that, I left.

“Later, someone knocked on my door. When I opened it, a man who helps the girl learn work slapped me. I think the girl told them what I did. Now I feel very ashamed.

“I don’t have a wife or kids. I only have a friend, but she left me. I only have my mom. I am from Uyo, Akwa Ibom.”

The police spokesperson warned parents in the video: “Parents, be careful about who you ask to watch your kids. In Ogborikoko, a woman asked her neighbor, this 41-year-old man, to watch her kids while she went to the market. Before she came back, he went into her house and raped her 13-year-old daughter.”
