Nigeria: Phone calls will now cost more money

The price of phone calls, data, and text messages will be 50% higher because the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved new prices on Monday.

This means:

  • Phone calls will now cost at least N9.6 per minute instead of N6.40.

  • The most expensive calls can cost up to N50 per minute.

  • Sending a text message (SMS) will cost N6 instead of N4.

  • 1GB of data will now cost N431.25 instead of N287.5.

  • On average, phone calls will now cost N16.5 per minute instead of N11.

The NCC said the price increase is smaller than what some network companies wanted. They asked for prices to rise by over 100%. The NCC said the new prices will help improve the telecom industry. This was stated by Reuben Muoka, the NCC’s director of Public Affairs.
